A sliding patio door opens your home to the garden without a door swinging into the room. The panel glides sideways on a track, so your table and chairs can stay where they are. You also get a wide glazed opening that lets in more daylight and a clear view of the garden.
We are Area Cladding, a family business that has supplied and fitted uPVC doors in Cambridge and the surrounding area since 1987. We are FENSA registered and fit Liniar uPVC sliding patio doors in white or anthracite grey. Tell us about your opening and we will talk you through what suits it.

Why choose sliding patio doors

A sliding door glides along a track, so nothing swings into your room or garden. Here is what that gives you.

You keep your floor space: A hinged door needs room to swing. A sliding panel moves sideways, so furniture can sit close to the doorway. It also works outside, where a patio table or planters could block an outward-opening door.

You get more daylight: More glass means more light and a clearer view of the garden. Your room feels brighter and more connected to the outdoors. The amount of daylight still depends on the door size, the opening and your room layout.

Garden access is easy: A wide glazed doorway gives you a simple route to the patio. The panel glides, so children and older family members can use it easily. A clean track and a sensible door size keep it that way.

It suits old and new homes: White looks bright and familiar. Anthracite grey gives a stronger, modern look and suits extensions and dark window frames. Let your brickwork and render guide the choice. We can talk through how each colour would look on your home.

How a sliding door works

A sliding door has one fixed panel and one moving panel. The moving panel runs on rollers along a track. You open it with the handle, and the same handle locks it. The moving panel slides past the fixed one, so you get a wide glazed doorway with no swinging door. Ask about the lock and rollers, as both shape how the door feels every day. The frame around it holds the glass and sets the threshold between inside and outside. The exact layout depends on the door system and the size of your opening.

What are uPVC sliding patio doors?

uPVC sliding patio doors use a glazed panel that moves sideways along a track instead of opening on hinges. A typical door has a fixed panel, a sliding panel, rollers, a frame, a handle and lock, and a threshold. Because the panel slides, it needs no swing space, which helps where furniture or walls limit the space in your room.

Is a sliding door right for your home?

A sliding door is a good match if:
space is tight, inside or out
you have a kitchen-diner or small living room where an inward-opening door would get in the way
you want a large area of glass for light and garden views
you will use the door every day

It is not right for every opening. If you want most of the width open at once, a bi-fold may suit you better. If you prefer a traditional look, French doors may be the better match. If another door suits your home better, we will say so.

Want most of the width open at once? Compare sliding doors with bi-folds.

What should you consider before choosing sliding patio doors?

Knowing what to ask makes choosing easier. These points also help you compare quotes fairly.
Opening size
Measure your current opening, but do not order from those numbers alone. Walls and floors are rarely perfectly square, so small errors add up. We survey the opening and confirm the true size before we order, so the door fits.
Threshold and access
Sliding doors run on a track, so the threshold differs from a hinged door. If step-free access matters for wheelchairs, pushchairs or older relatives, ask about threshold height and how it meets your floor and patio level.
Frame and glass
Two panels meet in the middle of a sliding door, which creates a central overlap. Frame widths also vary between systems. If a slim look matters to you, ask to see a frame sample, as photographs can mislead.
Weight and rollers
Larger panels are heavier, and heavier panels put more load on the rollers. On a wide opening, ask how the panel is supported and whether the rollers suit its size. Good support keeps the door gliding smoothly over time.
Glazing terms
Low-E coating helps keep heat in the room. U-value shows how much heat escapes, so lower is better. Ask for your door's figure. Triple glazing insulates more but adds weight and cost, so check it suits your door size.
Security questions to ask any installer
Security depends on the whole door. Ask every installer, including us, how many points the lock engages, whether an anti-lift device stops the panel lifting off its track, and whether the glass is toughened or laminated and fitted from inside.

Can an existing window be replaced with a sliding patio door?

You can often swap a window for a sliding door, but it depends on the wall. Lowering the sill is usually straightforward. Widening the opening is different, because it can need a new lintel.

A lintel is structural work. Our FENSA registration covers windows and doors. It does not cover structural work. If your opening needs a new lintel, a qualified professional should check it. We raise this at the survey, so nothing surprises you on the day.

At the survey we look at:

the size and construction of the existing opening
the load above it
the size of the new opening and any support it needs
inside and outside finishes
access to the property

We have adapted an existing Crittall window and brick-and-block opening for anthracite grey patio doors. Every building is different, so each one gets its own assessment.

Thinking of turning a window into a door? We will check the wall at the survey.

Sliding patio doors for extensions, conservatories and older homes

Sliding doors often suit extension and conservatory openings. The same checks apply: the structure around the opening, the threshold and the glazing. If the space is changing too, ask how the door will meet the surrounding frame or roof line.

Homes around Cambridge vary widely. We work on Victorian and Edwardian terraces, 1930s houses, bungalows, cottages and newer builds. Older homes can have uneven brickwork or old lintels, and these affect how a door is fitted.

If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with the local planning authority before you change doors. This matters most on elevations visible from the street. Rules vary, so ask first.

Do sliding patio doors need maintenance?

Yes. Sliding patio doors need regular care to keep them running smoothly. uPVC frames are easy to clean, but the track still needs attention.

Keep the track clear: Remove loose dirt and debris from the track. Grit slows the rollers and makes the door harder to slide.

Keep the frame and glass clean: Regular cleaning keeps the frame and glass looking fresh and helps you spot changes in how the door runs.

Watch for changes in operation: If the panel drags, sticks or makes odd noises, do not force it. The track or rollers may need checking.

What affects the cost of sliding patio doors

Every opening is different, so your price depends on your project. The main cost factors are:
the width and height of the opening, and the number of panels
the glazing specification
colour and hardware choices
changes to the opening, such as a window becoming a door or a wider gap needing a new lintel
removing the old door and making good around the new frame

When you compare quotes, check what each one includes. Removal and disposal, making good, and the lock and glazing specification often differ between quotes that look similar on price.

I have used Area Cladding Ltd many times in the past for the fitting of windows, doors and external cladding. This time it was two bedroom windows and, once again, George and his team did a brilliant job. The work was done in an efficient and thorough way and my rooms were left exactly as they had been found. I would highly recommend Area Cladding Ltd for this type of work.

Area cladding are a 5 star company. We have had a conservatory built by them and they provided a wonderful service. My parents also had windows and doors provided by them 30 years ago and they are still in great condition. Recently my mum had a problem with the lock on the door and they came within a few hours and fixed it. Area cladding are a top company and i give them the highest recommendation.

Absolutely thrilled with the double glazing windows installed! The team was efficient, fast, and a real pleasure to have around - super pleasant, professional, and even a bit of fun. The windows look fantastic and have already caught the attention of several neighbours asking who did them and if they can get a quote too! It’s clear these guys know what they’re doing. Highly recommend - great work and great people.

Highly recommend Area Cladding! We used them for windows, doors, cladding, fascias/soffits and guttering in March 2025 on recommendation from family and now pass that recommendation on as they are fantastic! They work hard, to high standards, are clean and tidy, competitively priced and a joy to have around, but what we also appreciate, is their knowledge, experience and network, as they have provided us with great support and advice and also contacts for other work we are looking to have done - thank you George, Jack and Jordan and we look forward to having you back again in the future for more home improvements!

Frequently Asked Questions

Sliding patio doors are external glazed doors with a panel that slides sideways along a track. Unlike a hinged door, the moving panel usually needs no swing space, so your furniture can sit close to the doorway, inside or out.

A sliding patio door has one fixed panel and one moving panel. The moving panel runs on rollers along a track. You open it with the handle, and the same handle locks it, giving a wide glazed doorway with no swing.

Yes, often. The panel slides sideways, so nothing swings into your room or garden. One trade-off is that part of the glass stays fixed, so the clear opening is narrower than the full door width. Ask us to check your layout.

Yes, in most cases. Slim frames and large panes give you a bigger glazed area than a hinged door of the same width, so more daylight comes in and the view of the garden is clearer. The final result still depends on the door size, the glazing and the layout of your room.

Yes, they can be. Heat loss depends on the whole door, not the frame alone. Low-E coating, argon-filled units, warm-edge spacers and good seals all keep heat in. A lower U-value means less heat escapes. Ask us for the U-value of your exact door before you order.

It can improve insulation, but most of the gain comes from moving from single to double glazing. Triple glazing makes each panel heavier and usually costs more. Ask whether it suits your door size and rollers.

Yes, but it depends on the wall. Lowering the sill is usually straightforward. Widening the opening may need a new lintel, which is structural work. We survey the opening first, so you know what is needed before work starts.

Sometimes. An existing Crittall window and brick-and-block opening can be adapted, as in a project we completed for anthracite grey patio doors. Every building differs, so we assess the wall, the load above and any support before we quote.

It depends on how you use the space. Sliding doors glide along a track and suit spaces with limited room. Bi-folds fold into sections and open most of the width at once. Your opening and preferred layout decide which suits you.

Modern sliding patio doors are secure when they have multi-point locking, anti-lift protection and toughened or laminated glass. Older or poorly maintained doors are easier to force, mainly because worn rollers and basic locks allow the sliding panel to be lifted out of its track. Look for PAS 24 or Secured by Design certification. Ask us to check the lock, frame and glazing on your door.

Price depends on the opening size, number of panels, glazing, colour, hardware and any work to the opening, such as a new lintel. We give a written quote after seeing the opening, so you can compare quotes like for like.

Mist on the room-facing glass is usually a humidity issue, common in kitchens and rooms where washing dries. Good ventilation helps with the first. Mist between the two panes means the sealed unit has failed, and the glass may need replacing.

Vacuum out loose debris, then wipe with a damp cloth and mild soapy cleaner. Check the drainage slots and rollers are not blocked. If the door still sticks, do not force it. Ask an installer to check the rollers.

Replacement windows and doors must meet Building Regulations. As a FENSA registered installer, we can self-certify this for windows and doors. Structural changes, such as a wider opening, are separate and may need their own approval.

Yes. Area Cladding supplies and fits uPVC sliding patio doors for homeowners in Cambridge and the surrounding area. We are a family business trading since 1987, FENSA registered and a Swish approved installer. We fit Liniar uPVC systems.
